The Farm

No pesticides. No synthetic fertilizers.
Very low machine till.

Carabao Fields is located in Treaty 13, in the traditional lands of Mississaugas of the Credit First Nations, Haudenosaunee  and Anishinaabe, now called Campbellville in rural Milton, Ontario.

We are in Year 2 of our operation, farming on 0.25 acre of rented land within Five Haystacks Farm.

We are an ecological farm following organic farming practices.  We aim to nourish the soil and protect the ecosystem the best we could, while providing quality, fresh produce to the local community.

We grow unique produce varieties, local favourites for the community, and Southeast Asian staples for more access to culturally significant farm fresh vegetables.

We are are honoured to be stewards of this small piece of land, and contribute to our community and a stronger local food system.

Meet your Farmers

Jien & Steve at the Georgetown Market 2023
Jien & Steve. We are a wife & husband team living in Georgetown, ON and farming in Campbellville (Milton).

Our Farming Practices

Our farm is human powered where we do all the work. On occassion, friends and family come out to help up.

We use basic tools and equipment, and practices that are lighter on the environment.

No use of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers

We do not use pesticides and synthethic fertilizers as these can be harmful to living creatures and the environment. We use organic fertilizers and compost that are more beneficial to the soil microbes, which in turn would help provide nourishment to the crops. We focus on feeding the soil, not just the plants. Our compost fully composted cow, horse, and mushroom materials is sourced within 10 minutes away from a reputable small producer. The organic fertilizers we use are all OMRI certified and include fish emulsion, alfalfa meal, and dehydrated hen manure.

Pest Management

We do not use pesticides to manage pests. They are managed using insect netting to protect the crops, manual removal, crop diversity and rotation, punctual weed management, and some companion planting.

Weed Management

Weeds are maintained using a combination of techniques. Our farm uses intensive planting spacing which help decrease space for weeds to grow. Silage tarps are used to cover and supress weeds when possible. Cover cropping is also implemented to help suppress weeds. Lastly, they are manually removed using cultivation tools such as the wheel hoe, long handed garden hoes, and hori-hori knives.

Low Tillage

Excessive tilling of soil destroys the soil ecosystem including the fungal and bacterial networks that form symbiotic relationship with plants. Tillage can also institute soil erosion and create a “hard pan”, which can affect water infiltration and limit the plant’s root development. We till very minimally, only when needed. Our cultivating tools mainly include wheel hoes, stirrup and hoop hoes that are lighter on the soil than typical machine tillage.

Diverse Crop Production and Crop Rotation

Diversity has been deemed to be good for the ecosystem. It creates a balance. It prevents any one living creature from dominating any one area and for that reason, it is also a pest management technique. Rotating crops such as planting light feeding plants after heavy feeding plants can also help manage soil fertility.

Minimal Waste

In our personal lives, we are very cognizant of our consumption and the waste we produce, and we extend this to our business practices as well. Reduce, reuse, recycle. Our business purchases are well thought out, balancing the environmental impacts, food safety, and produce longevity.
